Standing there all alone,
asking myself if I did the right thing
by enlisting in the military.
It seems as if I am in a fog,
unable to detect those all around me.
I don’t remember much of the explosion,
but it all starts to make sense.
These people all around me,
chose to also leave all that they knew,
to serve, protect, and fight for our country.
As a rush of relief washed over me,
I started to realize that whatever happens
in these next eight years,
whether I come home alive or not,
will forever change me,
and I will cherish this opportunity
to fight and protect the country I love.
